The Sugar Project
The Sugar Project will be raffling 10 skulls painted by artists working at the convention, Don’t Miss it!!
The Sugar Project is an art event involving awe inspiring tattoo artists and artists from all over the country and hopefully the world! They will be hand painting 50 skulls to be auctioned on ebay with all proceeds going to the urgent appeal to prevent the Woking Hospice from closing. The first auction will start on March 22nd 2010 and the project will run for 5 days, 10 skulls being auctioned hourly each day.
"Why on earth would you want to paint skulls?"... a question most popularly asked by my mum! This project has been inspired by the Mexican festival "El Dia De Los Muertos", which translates to "The Day of the Dead". Once a year the streets of Mexico fill with vibrant costumes and festival music as people gather to remember and celebrate the lives of people they have loved and lost. They sit vigil by their graves and shrines, playing their favourite music and singing their favourite songs, remembering and celebrating the people they loved so much, offering bread and brightly decorated skulls made of sugar to share with their family.
These brightly decorated sugar-skulls are the token image of the festival, appearing in the festival parade as larger than life stilt-dancers and handed out as sweets and treats for everyone. The Sugar Project is my way of remembering my dad, celebrating his life and saying thank you to those who helped care for us.
